The coral reefs of the West Indian Ocean are among the most diverse habitat in the world, with 350 species of corals alone with strong productivity, variety, color and specified niche adaptation. Due to the global climate change, even a small rise in sea water temperatures can have devastating effects on corals. The first notable impact of climate change to coral reefs in the region was observed in 1998, and up to 95 of corals died in some areas.
